Elysian Fields Quarterly The Baseball Review Vol. 17 #3 Fall 2000 World Series Issue - Featuring Jake Powell on the cover- 96 pages (with a number of black & white photos and illustrations) - EXCELLENT condition. Elysian Fields Quarterly (The Baseball Review) was originally founded as The Minneapolis Review of Baseball in 1981 by Ken LaZebnik and Steve Lehman. It began publication under its current title in 1992. Elysian Fields Quarterly was published briefly in 1992–1993 by William C. Brown Company of Dubuque, Iowa. Elysian Fields Quarterly ceased publication in 1995 due to financial difficulties, but was resurrected by Lehman and another contributor in 1998, at the urging publisher, Tom Goldstein and was published contuinuously until 2007. This outstanding magazine was an excellent resource for the history and literature of baseball. In addition to Chris Christensen's well-researched cover story debunking the myths surrounding the Jake Powell incident, a 1930s precursor to John Rocker's foray into bigotry; in this issue there are approximately 20 stories and other features including a thirteen- page feature on the organization Save Fenway Park! and its efforts to preserve and renovate that historic place in Boston; a look at the new Pac Bell Park by Bay area resident Mike Shaler; Jodi Ayres' poignant memoir (Playing with the Boys), detailing her experience with ignorance, sexism, and friendship while playing on a boys' high school baseball team; terrific fiction about a homeowner and the filming of Home Run Derby (Canceling Home Run Derby by David Monahan), an usher at Dodger Stadium (Dodger Blue by Jordan Henry), and a young stadium worker's infatuation with Dick Stuart (Concessions for Dr. Strangeglove by Steven Bills); Mickey Weintraub's Evening the Score, an amusing account of his minor league experiences and ballpark pranks in the late 1940s; Staff Writer's hilarious recollection of a unique baseball-teaching invention; the All-Romance team; fine poetry from John Poff, Sarah Freligh, Bill Meissner, and others; the EFQ Quotation Quiz; book reviews and much, much more. There is some minor edge and corner wear, but this magazine is still in EXCELLENT condition. Please see the scan so you can judge the condition for yourself (the magazine in the scan is the one you will get). No collection of baseball publications is complete without this outstanding magazine. Check out the scan for the great photo of Jake Powell on the cover. You won't be disappointed.
